🐦 Community Talk — The Revolution of Listening

I am in prison and free as a bird—well, almost. Let's not get carried away. Free enough to host a monthly talk!

🐦 Community Talk — The Revolution of Listening

Moving on from our new understanding that the end of the world will give birth to the new world, this talk — and the next few monthly talks — will turn to practicalities.

What are the key principles of action to remake the world in the next decade?
What are the social technologies that will remake the human?

What we have to do is stop focusing on the thing — the node — and turn to the quality of the link, the quality of the relation, the process. In other words: what connects.

The key force of connection is something so simple, so ubiquitous, we fail to see it.

It is listening.

Half a century ago, Carl Rogers discovered — or rather rediscovered — that healing and empowerment do not depend upon the imposition of knowledge as power, but through the act of listening. Unconditional positive regard.

True to our neoliberal times, this listening revolution was confined to the individual, to the therapy room.
Our task is to liberate it — to transform the public sphere, to dissolve the politics of power and replace it with the deliberation of the community.

Practically speaking, this involves two challenges:

  1. To create templates of these listening-empowering social spaces that generate a surplus of energies — time and money.
  2. To use this surplus to create systematic iterations of social growth — meaning, to create mass movements.

I will share some designs with you.
Yes, some numbers.
Yes, what we all need to start doing now.

This is praxis in action — praxis at the end of one world and the beginning of another.

That’s a wrap for the Rev21 Convention! 500 people across 18 sessions with 50 speakers and many more organisers behind the scenes. Thank you so much to everyone who came and supported us. We raised £6000 and got dozens of new regular donors for the revolution. This is the work!

As always, you can sign up for nonviolent civil resistance with Just Stop Oil in the UK or via the A22 Network internationally.
